Today, the temperature in the ocean is about 85 degrees, so we're kind of getting up to that point where these cells are stressed, so hopefully this is the beginning of the end. Many businesses are cutting hours and staff, just struggling to stay afloat. For healthy people, effects from the algae can dissipate as soon as they leave the beach.


Brevetoxins, chemicals produced by Florida red tide, may also irritate pre-existing respiratory conditions including asthma. They have also reported eye irritation from the sea foam.

FWC spokesperson Kelly Richmond said blooming season typically starts in the late summer or early fall, but an end to the season can't be predicted. Fish kill reports were received for multiple locations in Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, and Collier counties. There are reports out of Sarasota that county workers in the courthouse are being offered masks to wear at work to try and cope with the stench and the irritations that come from being exposed to all of this. While Sarasota County has not seen much fish kill on the beaches during the last few weeks thanks to favorable weather conditions, samples drawn by the Florida Department of Health continue to show varying concentrations of red tide algal bloom in the waters just off the coast. Aerosols from the toxin can travel up to a mile from the shore. Sarasota County officials plan to conduct further testing Saturday to determine whether the no swim advisory can be lifted at other beaches in the area.
